Women
On The Verge Of HRT |
 |
| The
Lowry Studio - (Mon 22nd - 27th June) |
| Starring
Louise Jameson (Rosa di Marco, Eastenders) and Janet Dibley
(Deborah Johnson, The Chase). Best friends Vera and Anna
have a few things in common – being the 'wrong'
side of 40, husband troubles and a love of Irish singing
sensation Daniel O’Donnell to name but a few. During
a trip to Donegal to see their idol in concert, Vera and
Anna come face to face with the realities of their lives
– loveless marriages, husbands in the clutches of
mid-life crises, the menopause (or should that be ‘mental
pause’) and the prospect of being thrown on the
sexual scrap heap. Assisted by a handsome young waiter
(it helps that he looks like Daniel O’Donnell),
Vera and Anna confront their fears and begin to realise
that life doesn't have to end when HRT begins. Brought
to you by Marie Jones, writer of Stones in his Pockets
(The Lowry, April 2009), this hilarious, feisty and sometimes
painful look into the lives of two women on the verge.
There is a 2pm matinee on the Wednesday and Saturday. |

The
Lancashire Hotpots |
 |
| The
Lowry Quays - (Fri 24th July) |
| There
aren’t many bands who can have their videos played
on MTV2 and have real ales named after them but there
also aren’t many bands like The Lancashire Hotpots.
Their first album Never Mind The Hotpots with its comedic
folk observations on 21st Century life reached No 2 in
the BBC 6 Music Album charts. Their new album Pot Sounds
offers further comic insights into topics such as climate
change (Don’t Make The Polar Bears Cry) and Saturday
afternoon shopping (I Fear Ikea). |

John
Cooper Clarke |
 |
| The
Lowry Quays - (Sat 1st Aug) |
|
John Cooper Clarke is the Bard of Salford and, possibly
the funniest man in showbiz. His poetry is from the street
and his jokes from the working mens clubs. He began performing
around Manchester as opener for bands such as Buzzcocks,
the Fall and Joy Division, in the punk era and hasn't
stopped since. His rapid fire delivery can be heard, backed
by The Invisible Girls, on classic albums such as Snap
Crackle and Bop, and his book and film Ten Years In an
Open Necked Shirt. His best known tracks include Evidently
Chicken Town and Beasley Street. Both observations on
the grimness of growing up in post war Salford. JCC has
been namechecked as a massive influence by the Arctic
Monkeys and his works introduced to a whole new generation
of fans. John is the rightful headliner to the first Salford
Festival of Music Comedy! |

Tim
Minchin - Ready For This |
 |
| The
Lowry Lyric - (Wed 2nd Sep) |
| In
2005, Tim Minchin became the most talked-about act of
the Edinburgh Fringe, garnering sell-out shows, 5-star
reviews and the Perrier Best Newcomer Award. Now, following
a sell-out UK tour in 2008, the super minstrel lugs his
piano back out on the road to give those poor souls who
missed out another chance to see his biting and brilliant
show. Back from a massive Australian tour, Tim wants to
know if you are Ready For This, without really specifying
what this is. |

Dave
Gorman |
 |
| The
Lowry Lyric - (Sun 13th Sep) |
| Five
years after he last toured the UK he’s embarking
on a truly unique stand-up comedy tour. A lot of acts
will tell you they’re covering the length and breadth
of the country… but Dave’s really doing it.
Dave Gorman: Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up
will see the intrepid comedian covering the extremes of
the British mainland as he travels from this land’s
southernmost point to its northernmost tip, taking in
the most easterly and westerly points along the way. If
nothing else he’ll get to see four lighthouses.
Dave will be performing each and every night of the journey
but as this is a tour that promises to reach parts of
the country that other tours just don’t reach, it
goes without saying that the venues will sometimes be
a little unconventional too. He’ll play in 2000
seat theatres but also 30 seat village halls. He’ll
be performing in a barn, the odd hotel function room and
– odder still - a railway dining car. Oh, and did
we mention he’s going to do the whole thing on his
push bike? The travelling, we mean. Not the gigs. That’d
be silly. He’ll be standing up for those. If he
still can. He’s 38 and not especially fit. 1500
miles. 32 days in the saddle. 32 nights on the stage.
His Mum’s told him not to do it but he won’t
listen. |

Observational comedy, droll storytelling and fantasy collide
to create very funny sort-of-jokes, amusingly articulated
by arguably the best comedian you've never heard of. Unless
you have heard of him, in which case you’re probably
a member of the growing gang of people for whom Alun Cochrane
is 'that comedian that's very funny’. As
seen on BBC2’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks, BBC 1’s
Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week and Channel
4's 8 Out Of 10 Cats. |

Dave
Gorman |
 |
|
Lowry Lyric Theatre - (Sat 13th March 2010) |
| In
2009, DAVE GORMAN set off on a unique national tour. The
intention: to cycle over 1500 miles across Britain in
33 days… with a gig each night. I suppose that explains
the title. But demand for the show has been so high that
he’s decided to keep performing it… but this
time without cycling from venue to venue. He’s obviously
getting lazy. So now only the last bit of the title makes
sense. But look at it from his point of view. Same show,
fewer blisters. What would you do? Of course from your
point of view it doesn’t matter because it’s
not a show about the journey. |
